A man accused of taking a local couple’s money in return for building improvements that he never worked on in 2022 was arrested in the two cases against him last week.
Brian E. Miller, 58, of Claysburg, faces charges of false statements to induce agreements for home improvement services in two cases. Both cases were filed on Nov. 2, and Miller was appointed on Friday.
One of the alleged victims told police she and her husband had hired Miller to replace the roof of their residence and paid him on Aug. 8, 2022, for the supplies needed to fix the roof.
She said Miller was given a check for $4,596 after he generated a bill of sales.
The same couple reportedly hired Miller to replace the roof of the pavilion at their church in September 2022.
The couple had reportedly been quoted $2,746 for the supplies needed.
The victim alleged both checks had been cashed but Miller did not return it with the supplies or to do the work. Miller had reportedly stopped communicating with the couple.
The couple reached out to the roofing supply store Miller was going to buy the supplies from and were told Miller had been given a quote but an order had not been purchased.
The couple provided the police with the bill of sale, check and bank records.
Bail was set at $30,000 straight in both cases. Preliminary hearings are scheduled for Feb. 7.
